Money Train 2 Slot Review: RTP, Money Cart 2 Bonus and Free Demo

Our score: 8.9/10

Quick verdict: the sequel fixed the original's biggest weakness with base-game respins, then made the bonus far deeper with Snipers, Necromancers and Golden Bonus symbols. High volatility, 96.4% RTP and a 50,000x ceiling. The best entry point to the series.

What is Money Train 2?

The Money Train 2 slot is the second game in Relax Gaming's Money Train series, released on . It keeps the 5x4 grid and 40 fixed paylines of the original. The gang moves into a steampunk, post-apocalyptic Wild West, with an armored train packed with dynamite.

Four outlaws are the premium symbols: an older man with goggles and a lit stick of dynamite, a man with a mohawk, a gang member in a gas mask and green hat, and a blonde woman with a revolver. The Wild is a metal skull with exhaust pipes. The Money Cart 2 bonus adds its own cast of special symbols, from the Sniper to the Necromancer.

The big change is the base game. The original Money Train often felt like waiting for the bonus. Money Train 2 adds a respin feature that triggers far more often and multiplies a win, so there's something to watch between bonuses.

Critics rated it highly. It won BigWinBoard Game of the Year 2020 and CasinoBeats Slot of the Year 2021. Like every Relax game, it runs in HTML5, so it works in desktop and mobile browsers alike.

Rules in a minute

How to play Money Train 2

Every spin is decided by the RNG, so there's no strategy that changes the odds. You choose the bet size and how long you play.

  1. Choose your bet

Set a stake between $0.20 and $20 per spin. All 40 lines are always active, so the bet is the full cost of a spin.

  2. Match 3 or more

Wins pay for 3, 4 or 5 matching symbols on a line, starting from the leftmost reel. The skull Wild substitutes for every symbol except the Bonus.

  3. Two Bonus symbols

Two Bonus symbols in the base game start the respin feature: the game respins until you win and multiplies that win.

  4. Three Bonus symbols

Three or more Bonus symbols trigger the Money Cart 2 bonus with 3 respins.

  5. Build the grid

Every new symbol locks and resets the respins to 3. Fill a reel and a new reel opens, up to 7x4.

  6. Collect the total

When the respins run out, every value on the grid is added up. Fill all 28 positions and you get an extra 500x.

Paytable

Symbols and paytable

The premium symbols are the four outlaws, and the top one, the older man with dynamite, pays 20x for five on a line. The skull Wild pays the same 20x. Four card suits make up the low end, paying 3x to 5x for five.

Line wins in the base game are modest. Most of the game's value sits in the respins and the Money Cart 2 bonus.

Checked in the game

The values here come from the paytable inside the Money Train 2 demo, shown at a $2 bet and divided by the stake. Five spades pay 5x and five Wilds pay 20x.

Between bonuses

Base-game respins with a growing multiplier

Land two Bonus symbols in a regular spin and the respin feature begins. Both symbols show multiplier values, which are added together. The reels then respin until you land a win, and every respin that doesn't pay adds +1 to the multiplier. When the win finally comes, the full multiplier is applied to it.

It lands roughly once every 73 spins, about six times as often as the bonus. Most results are small, but it gives the base game a pulse the original never had.

Say the two Bonus symbols show 2x and 3x, so the multiplier starts at 5x. Two respins miss and the multiplier climbs to 7x. The third respin pays 0.5x, so you collect 0.5 × 7 = 3.5x. That's $0.70 at a $0.20 bet, or $3.50 at $1.

Illustrative example; multiplier values come from the game.

The Money Cart 2 bonus, explained

Money Cart 2 is a hold-and-respin bonus, like the original, but with far more special symbols. It's triggered by 3 or more Bonus symbols, and you're paid the sum of everything on the grid at the end.

  • Base

    Bonus

Shows a value of 1x to 10x your bet. The basic coin of the feature.

  • Rare

    Golden Bonus

    A high-value version worth 20x to 200x your bet.

  • Payer

    Payer

Reveals a value and adds it to every other visible symbol.

  • Collector

    Collector

Reveals a value, then collects every visible value into its own.

  • Combo

    Collector/Payer

Adds the sum of all other visible values to its own. It then adds that updated value to every other visible symbol.

  • Sniper

    Sniper

Reveals a value and doubles 3 to 8 other Bonus symbols. It can hit the same symbol more than once.

  • Revive

    Necromancer

Reveals a value and brings back 2 to 7 used non-persistent specials: Collectors, Payers, Collector/Payers or Snipers. They fire again.

  • Extra spin

    Reset Plus

Reveals a value and raises the starting value of the spins-left counter by one. It resets to 4 instead of 3, and more Reset Plus symbols raise it further.

  • Persistent

    Persistent Payer

Adds its value to all other visible symbols on the spin it lands and on every spin after. It doesn't pay itself.

  • Persistent

    Persistent Sniper

Doubles 3 to 8 other Bonus symbols at the end of the spin it lands and every spin after.

  • Persistent

    Persistent Collector

Collects all visible values on every spin until the bonus ends. It doesn't collect its own value.

How the grid grows

The bonus starts on the 5x4 grid with 3 respins. Every new symbol locks in place and resets the counter to 3. Here's the clever part: fill a whole reel and a new reel opens beside the grid. It can happen twice, taking the grid to 7x4 and 28 positions. Fill all 28 and the game adds a flat 500x to your total.

The Necromancer has the largest effect on the total. Bringing back a Sniper or a Collector late in the bonus repeats its effect on a grid already full of values. The in-game rules screen says it revives 2 to 7 used specials. Only the Payer, Sniper and Collector have persistent versions.

Feature buy

Money Train 2 bonus buy: 100x for a 98% RTP

Where it's allowed, you can buy the Money Cart 2 bonus for 100x your bet. That's $20 per round at a $0.20 bet and $100 at $1. The theoretical return on bought bonuses is 98%, versus 96.4% in regular play.

As with the original, that figure is an average over a huge number of buys. Many single bonuses land below 100x, and the rare rounds with an early Persistent Sniper or a full grid carry the average. See our bonus buy guide for every game in the series.

The numbers

Money Train 2 RTP, volatility and max win

RTP: 96.4%

Over millions of spins, every $100 wagered returns $96.40 in theory. A single session can land far above or below that. Some operators use a lower 94.4% setting, which costs about $1.60 more per $100 wagered. Our RTP versions guide shows how to check.

Volatility: high

Hit frequency is 19.55%, so roughly one spin in five pays something. The base respins arrive about every 73 spins and the bonus about every 435. That's around $87 wagered between bonuses at a $0.20 bet, or $435 at $1. Gaps far longer than that are normal.

Max win: 50,000x

The cap is 50,000x your bet: $10,000 at the $0.20 minimum and $50,000 at $1. Gambling Insider reported more than 15 cap hits in the first ten days. BigWinBoard counted over 100 by August 2021.

Those are a small number of results among millions of rounds played. Most bonuses pay a tiny fraction of the cap, so treat 50,000x as a ceiling, not a target.

Head to head

Money Train 2 vs the original Money Train

Money Train 2 is better in almost every way that matters: more to do in the base game, a deeper bonus and a ceiling two and a half times higher. The original only wins on simplicity and a cheaper buy.

Pros and cons

What we like

  • Base-game respins make the wait for the bonus far more entertaining
  • The deepest bonus of the classic 5x4 games, with the Necromancer as a standout
  • Award-winning design and sound, still sharp years later
  • Bonus buy at 98% RTP where it's allowed

What we don't

  • High volatility: the bonus lands only about once in 435 spins
  • Many bonuses finish below the 100x buy price
  • Some casinos run a lower 94.4% RTP version
  • No bonus buy in the UK

Similar games

These games share the Money Cart respin bonus but change the grid, the symbols or the math.

  • Money Train

The 2019 original: the same 5x4 layout and outlaws, but no base-game respins, fewer specials and a 20,000x cap. The buy is cheaper at 80x.

  • Money Train 3

Same grid and paytable shape, with Tommy Gun symbols, an Absorber and four buy prices. It has a 100,000x cap but a lower 96.1% RTP.

  • Money Train 4

Keeps the Sniper and Necromancer but moves to a 6x6 scatter-pays grid with no Wild. Volatility is very high.

  • Money Train 5

Back on 5x4 lines with 96.1% RTP, but the bonus moves along train stations and adds an Ultra mode.

  • Money Cart series

Bonus-only games built on the same respin idea. Bonuses come far more often, and wins are much smaller.

Our verdict: is it worth playing?

Money Train 2: the most balanced game in the series.

Money Train 2 takes everything that made the original work and removes the dead time. The base-game respins keep you engaged, and the bonus is deep enough that no two rounds feel alike.

It suits players who enjoy high volatility and set a firm budget, and it's the Money Train we'd start with. Skip it if you want frequent wins or have a small bankroll: the bonus averages about once in 435 spins and most rounds are modest. Money Train 3 is even more volatile and has a lower RTP.

How we checked the numbers

Money Train 2 launched in 2020, and several of its figures were reported differently at the time. This Money Train 2 review starts from the Relax Gaming Money Train 2 launch announcement and cross-checks every figure against BigWinBoard, SlotCatalog, AboutSlots and FruitySlots. Launch results come from Gambling Insider; awards from Relax and CasinoBeats.

Where sources disagree, we say so. Some list a September 7 release, a $0.10 minimum bet or a 50x full-grid prize. We use the figures supported by Relax and the most reliable reviews. For the Necromancer, reviews give either 1 to 6 or 2 to 7 revived symbols. The in-game rules screen says 2 to 7, so that's the figure we use.

The paytable and the special-symbol rules were checked in the demo's in-game screens. The text was drafted with AI from this fact base and checked by an editor. Read our editorial policy and review method.

Play responsibly

Money Train 2 averages one bonus in about 435 spins, and many bonuses pay less than the 100x buy price. Set a budget you can afford to lose before you start, and stop when it's gone. Gambling is not a way to make money.
